To the 27-year-old veteren Su Li-Wen, these medals cannot match her achievement in the 2008 Summer Olympics ---- She did not get a medal, but she displayed the spirit of a sportsman and a Taekwondo fighter.

Su, the Taiwanese delegate in the Beijing Summer Lympics 2008 Women's Taekwondo -57kg Category, entered the ring after making a promise that she would fight for the gold medal while her father battles cancer.

In the preliminary round, Su Li-Wen put up an intense match with the Korean delegate Lim Su-jeong (who later won the gold medal), severely injured her left knee and lost the duel by 0:1. Her coach had to carry her out of the ring after the match. 6 hours later in the repechage round, she defeated her opponent and entered the Bronze Medal Match, where she would encounter Martina Zubcic of Croatia.

After the repechage round, her left cruciate ligament was avulsed, the phalangeal bone was fractured, and recrudesced old injuries. Despite strong objections from her coach, she insisted on fighting in the Bronze Medal Match.

Throughout the 6 minutes in the 3 rounds, she was hopping on her right leg and attacking with only her left (injured) leg. She executed 2 head kicks scoring 4 points, and collapsed 11 times in the ring. She stood up after every fall and resume the match. The score was tied at 4:4 after 3 rounds, and she was scored by her opponent in the sudden death round. That was the last time she fell, but the first time she wept ---- weeping not in agony, but in regret for not fulfulling her promise to her father. She was immediately wheelchair-ridden after the match and pending surgeory.

She lost the medal, but she won the crowd. She displayed Olympic Sportsmanship and the honourable spirit of a Taekwondo fighter.
